Why are In-Market views before January 10, 2012 estimated?

We officially started tracking In-Market views on January 10, 2012.

In-Market views before January 10, 2011 were created by taking all of the view requests to our player from the past year, looking at the IP address and using a geolocation database to map that view to a specific country. The views that were mapped to the US and UK were marked as In-Market views.

Needless to say, that's a lot of views to map! Using IPs to get a location is not an exact science, but it does provide reliable data for the regions (cities, towns, states) a user is located, and therefore we can safely assume that we are correctly assigning the right countries to views.

Regardless of our confidence in the estimates, we did want to note when these are being displayed in your dashboard for transparency reasons. There are a few scenarios where users might be purposely setting their IP to appear to be coming from a different region than where they really are physically located, unfortunately, there's not much we (or anyone) can do in this type of situation.

Please note that we use these estimated view numbers to calculate In-Market RPMs before January 10, 2012.
